Privacy policy
Who we are
Ordinary Giants (ordinarygiants.au) is an independent publication run by Jake Ashe, an individual based in Victoria, Australia. In this policy, "we" and "us" means Ordinary Giants.
We take your privacy seriously and handle personal information in line with the Australian Privacy Principles.
What we collect
Your email address, if you subscribe to our emails. That is the only personal information we ask for.
Anything you choose to send us, if you email us (for example to contribute, to suggest someone to feature, or about advertising).
Usage information, collected automatically by Google Analytics: pages visited, how you arrived (for example from Instagram or a search), approximate location (city or country), device and browser type. We use this in aggregate to understand what people read and watch. We do not use it to identify you.
Technical information, such as your IP address, which our hosting provider processes to deliver the site and which our signup form uses briefly to stop spam.
Advertising information, collected by Google AdSense when ads are shown: cookies or similar identifiers, your IP address, device and browser type, and the pages you view. Google uses this to choose which ads to show and to measure them. We do not receive information that identifies you.
How we use it
To send you new films and stories from Ordinary Giants. Every email has a link to unsubscribe, and we stop emailing you as soon as you do.
To reply to you when you get in touch.
To understand which films and stories people enjoy, so we can make more of them.
To keep the site and our mailing list secure and free of spam.
To show ads that help pay for the films. The ads are served by Google AdSense, as explained below.
We do not sell, rent or trade your personal information. Your email address is never shared with advertisers.
Who we share it with
We use a small number of trusted services to run the site. They only receive what they need to do their job:
Flodesk, which manages our mailing list and stores email addresses in the United States.
Google Analytics, which measures how the site is used and processes data in the United States and other countries.
Google AdSense, which shows ads on the site and processes data in the United States and other countries. Google and its advertising partners may use cookies to show ads based on your visits to this and other websites. See how Google uses information from sites that use its services at policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites.
YouTube (Google), which hosts our films. When you play a film, YouTube may collect information under Google's own privacy policy. Films are embedded in privacy-enhanced mode, so YouTube does not set tracking cookies until you press play.
Our website hosting provider, which serves the site and may process your IP address.
Because some of these services are overseas, by using the site or subscribing you consent to your information being stored and processed outside Australia. We only use providers that protect personal information to a standard comparable to Australian law.
We may also disclose information if the law requires it.
Cookies, analytics and advertising
Cookies are small files saved by your browser.
Google Analytics sets cookies to tell new visits from returning ones. You can opt out of Google Analytics on every website with Google's browser add-on (tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout).
Google AdSense uses advertising cookies to show and measure ads. Ads may be personalised, based on your visits to this and other websites, or non-personalised, based only on the page you are reading and your general location.
You can turn off personalised ads from Google at any time in Google's My Ad Center (myadcenter.google.com), and opt out of personalised ads from many other advertising companies at aboutads.info and youronlinechoices.eu.
If you visit from the European Economic Area, the UK or Switzerland, we ask for your consent before any advertising cookies are used, through a consent message provided by Google. You can say yes, say no, or choose what to allow, and change your choice later.
You can also block or delete cookies in your browser settings. The site works fully without them; you may just see less relevant ads.
How long we keep it
We keep your email address until you unsubscribe or ask us to delete it. Analytics data is kept by Google for 14 months. Advertising data is kept by Google under its own retention policy (policies.google.com/technologies/retention). Emails you send us are kept for as long as they are useful to reply or follow up.
Keeping it safe
We take reasonable steps to protect your information from misuse, loss and unauthorised access. No system is perfectly secure, but we only keep what we need and only use reputable providers.
Your choices
Unsubscribe at any time using the link in any email.
Ask to see, correct or delete the personal information we hold about you by emailing hello@ordinarygiants.au. We will respond within 30 days.
Complaints
If you have a concern about how we handle your information, please email hello@ordinarygiants.au first and we will do our best to sort it out. If you are not satisfied, you can contact the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner at oaic.gov.au.
Children
Our mailing list is not intended for children under 16, and we do not knowingly collect their information.
Changes
We may update this policy from time to time. The latest version will always be on this page, with the date it was last updated.
